Concrete sleepers with galvanised steel “H Beam” posts – Merrimac, Gold Coast

Another one of Australian Retaining Walls regular customers required our services again, this time to upgrade the failing timber garden wall that surrounds the communal swimming pool area in this residential complex located in Merrimac, Gold Coast, Qld.

After some deliberation with our sales manager, a Concrete sleepers with galvanised steel “H Beam” posts style of retaining wall was agreed upon.

Everyone was in agreement that a replacement timber wall was not what was needed, so now the choice was between a concrete block and Concrete sleepers. Every millimetre counted as the road through was quite narrow therefore the Concrete sleepers with galvanised steel “H Beam” posts was chosen as it is the thinnest system available to us at only 100mm wide.

The old dilapidated timber wall would need to be removed and disposed of first and this proved to be a lot trickier than first thought. While removing the first panel we discovered the mains power line for the whole complex running the full length of the old wall! This type of cable should be buried 600mm under the ground but we at Australian Retaining Walls frequently find that this is not the case. Fortunately, we were able to move the cable over slightly and it would be buried behind the new Concrete sleepers with galvanised steel “H Beam” posts wall. Needless to say, the digging of the new holes commenced slowly and very carefully just in case there were any more underground surprises awaiting us!

We discovered some plumbing going to the pool but thankfully it was not in our way. Confident that we were now in the clear the construction of this Concrete sleepers with galvanised steel “H Beam” posts wall could gather some momentum, we soon had the posts in the ground and set in concrete and the next day the concrete sleepers were installed and back filled with 20mm drainage gravel before grading the garden soil and completing another job on the Gold Coast
