The owner of an established property was facing a critical situation with old timber retaining walls nearing collapse, threatening both their home and the neighbouring property. The urgency to replace the failing structures with a more reliable solution was paramount to prevent potential damage and ensure safety.
Our Solution
After a thorough evaluation of different materials and techniques, Australian Retaining Walls decided on constructing a stone masonry wall using local basalt rocks. This choice was driven by the need for exceptional durability and stability. The wall was designed with 50mm weep holes at approximately 1.2-metre centres to ensure proper drainage, thus enhancing the wall’s longevity. The construction process also involved securing the neighbouring top wall to prevent any future structural issues.
Outcome
The newly built basalt stone masonry wall not only fortified the property against potential collapses but also significantly enhanced its aesthetic appeal. This investment in stone masonry offers a substantial reduction in long-term maintenance costs compared to timber walls. Calculated over an extended period, such as 50 years, the cost of maintaining the basalt wall is expected to be about a quarter of that required for multiple timber replacements, making it an economically wise choice.
